In a compelling move that could reshape the future of console gaming, Microsoft has revealed a new Xbox-branded handheld experience, launching through a collaboration with Asus. The upcoming devices are expected to hit shelves later this year, offering gamers an entirely new way to experience the Xbox ecosystem.
These handhelds, built by Asus under the popular ROG Ally line, won’t look like your traditional Xbox—but functionally, they are. Microsoft has developed a dedicated Xbox startup UI that loads as soon as the device powers on, giving users a console-like interface without navigating through Windows.
The Xbox app will serve as the central hub, giving players access to their Game Pass titles, Steam games, and third-party apps such as Discord. Microsoft aims to create a seamless experience that mimics the traditional console environment while leveraging the flexibility and performance of a Windows PC.
“This is an Xbox,” a Microsoft representative said during the announcement. That statement, though simple, marks a major philosophical shift for the company. Rather than tethering users to a single console, Xbox is becoming a multi-device gaming platform—accessible from mobile, desktop, and now handheld hardware.
An 11-minute behind-the-scenes video was released alongside the announcement. The production evoked memories of the iconic Xbox One X rollout, complete with sleek studio visuals and insights from key designers. Among those featured was Carl Ledbetter, who played a major role in shaping earlier Xbox consoles. He called the new handheld approach a “defining moment” for the Xbox brand.
Though release dates are pending, the handhelds are expected to become a key part of Microsoft’s broader push into cloud and portable gaming. With cross-platform play, cloud saves, and Game Pass syncing, users can expect a fully integrated experience—one that redefines where and how we play.
